Film Scoring

This course is designed to immerse students in the craft of composing music for film. Through weekly assignments, students will develop their composing "muscle" and establish strong creative habits for consistent musical output. The class will focus on key elements of film scoring, such as creating themes, developing unique palettes for each project, and leveraging music technology in personal and creative ways.

After covering foundational topics, sudents will work with film projects currently in production, receiving a weekly brief and composing a one-minute cue that captures the required mood. The course will primarily use Logic Pro, but concepts will be applicable to other digital audio workstations. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of original compositions and a deep understanding of the scoring process, including:

  • Professional workflows in film scoring

  • Music tech and digital tools for film scoring

  • How to create memorable themes

  • Developing a unique palette for each project

  • Strategies for expanding and refining musical ideas

  • Experience with scoring to picture

  • Filmmakers and students with some music theory knowledge (reading music is recommended but not required)
